Except for Reverend Jenkinsâs blessing on their lunch, the man hadnât said a word as they traveled to their next destination. Hans was angry enough with the man to, well, he wasnât exactly sure, but it wouldnât be God-honoringâthat was for certain.
âRight up there on that knoll, Hans, to the left is a small cabin. We can bunk there for the night if it isnât already occupied.â
No âIâm sorryâ or âthank youâ? Hansâs jaw tightened and he felt heat rising up the back of his neck.
Hans checked the dwelling. Besides a few rodents and spiders, it was dry and had ample floor space for two bedrollsâon opposite sides of the table. He flung both packs into their respective corners.
âIâve got to care for Rowdy.â He did not offer to assist the reverend in getting down. He figured he was being kind to at least wait until the man was out before unhitching the cart from the horse.
As in his military days, he walked. Demons fought for space in his mind. He clenched and unclenched his fists as he marched toward an outcropping of rock. The struggle to climb felt good and his chest heaved from exertion. Hans took in great gulps of air when he reached the top. For what might be miles, he saw rolling hills, blue streaks of streams, and clumps of dark brush dotting the landscape.
Settling into a natural groove in the rock, he massaged the area around his sore ribs. He had overdone it when heâd climbed and he was suffering, but it was worth it. The scene before him was breathtaking. He glanced back to the small cabin and marveled at how far he had walked. He whistled to Rowdy and the horse responded, letting him know heâd be able to get back in the dark. Hans settled into the hollow in the rock as the sun continued its descent creating myriad hues of purples and pinks. A burst of yellow sprang forth, illuminating the ground until the sun nestled itself in for the night.
Hans remained on the rock. The light buzzing of night sounds calmed him. He swatted at a flying insect and counted the chirps and clicks of various frogs and toads as they called out to each other. His laugh silenced the music when it dawned on him that while all Godâs creatures were searching for a mate, heâd called to Rowdy.
Katieâs green eyes flashed before his own. Leaning back, he closed his eyes. Freckles danced in his vision while skirts swished past creating a gentle breeze exposing slim ankles.
